The history of the Curling sport
It is sure that curling was already played in the 17th century in Scotland. In a process report bishop John Graham is reprimanded because he desecrated the Sunday with broom and stone: 'He was a curler on the ice on the Sabbath day'. The first curling club, the grand Caledonien curling club, was founded 1838 in Edinburgh.

Known as oldest curling stone is the "Stirling Stone", which has engraved the date 1511. So one can assume that the Curling sport has arisen approx. 500 years ago when it was an elitist sport for doctors and clergymen.

The Scots refined this game later by regulating the size of the ice field and the form of the stones.

Also Scottish inheritance is the typical atmosphere of the fairness, the Spirit of curling. In the following curling spread to Canada, where the main contibution for contemporary curling was then made, e.g. by founding curling clubs and organizing great championships. This enlarged the popularity of curling. Curling is right now played by over 2 million people in approx. different 50 countries.
The history of the Curling Club Hamburg e.V.
In the beginning of 1969 four men from Hamburg won for their own surprise a fantastic 3rd place in an international curling competition during a winter holiday in Arosa. They were so pleased about this, that they decided curling must also be played in Hamburg.

Kurt Eckelmann
Vizepresident 1969-1975

Soon afterwards the curling club Hamburg was founded and registered with his first president Herbert Behrens particularly on operating of John Jahr and Kurt Eckelmann.

The fact that curling was played in Hamburg now made its round fast. But nevertheless a suitable surface of the ice was still missing.

At first the Curlers played at the Wallanlagen where they were permanently disturbed by ice-skaters, therefore they tried to get ice-times in the plant in Stellingen.

The Curling sport was followed with a great enthusiasm at the plant in Stellingen in the following period.
But also at the plant in Stellingen it came conditionally to invincible problems through the hardly predictable weather in Hamburg.

In order to be able to move the curling stones also at bad weather conditions over the ice, adventurous techniques were developed.

Such as to 'wobble' the stones with great strength over the ice.

But also the fact that one hat to use those techniques could not reduce the enthusiasm of the curlers.

These days the Curlers still have the opportunity during the season (end of September till middle of March) to follow the Olympic discipline.

The plant is leading also according to today's claims in Europe so that regularly big tournaments are carried out on the ice in Hamburg. The European curling association frequently organizes World Cup secretions of European national teams among other tournaments.
